About
What is kathak?
Pronounced keə’ta:k or kuh·thuh-k
One of the classical dance forms of India. Born in ancient India from the narrative style of religious storytellers (Kathākārs), it evolved into an entertainment medium under the patronage of Muslim rulers and found love in the homes of courtesans. After British rule in India, it flourished unabated. Like the classical dance styles of India, this style is built on the technique and theory laid out by the great Indian treatises of art, dramaturgy and music.
What is Kathakology?
Kathakology has been founded on the basic tenet that anyone can dance. There is no such thing as two left feet. All it takes is three things: the want to move, the ability to listen to one’s body, and letting it flow with the rhythm. There is no one-size-fits-all approach here, whether you’re discovering your dancer self, training as a performing artist, following an exam-based structure, or simply here to have fun.
Kathakology is based in New Jersey, USA, and offers both in-person and online classes.
Philosophy
Classes are not the complete sum of a student’s dance education. Other facets include workshops, performances, exams (where applicable), lecture-demonstrations by visiting artists, and other learning opportunities. Students are highly encouraged to take part in the activities associated with their chosen form of dance.
